Tom Carruth

[Dick Streeper wrote an article about Tom Carruth called "Queen Maker" and which appeared in the August 1998 issue of the "American Rose", pp.13-14. Here are some highlights...] He was awarded his first All-America Rose Selections winner in 1997 with the striped floribunda named 'Scentimental'. It has recently been announced that he has won two additional AARS awards for 1999 with roses to be called 'Fourth of July'>, a climber, and 'Betty Boop', a floribunda. Carruth should be recognized, along with Jack Christensen, as a breeder of the exhibitors' favorite, 'Crystalline'. He was instrumental in introducing Gareth Fryer's AARS award-winning 'Sunset Celebration' into the United States market... Carruth's first job was at Jackson & Perkins learning the rose business from Bill Warriner... he then went on to Armstrong Roses to work as an assistant to Jack Christensen... Carruth moved on to manage the plant breeding operations of Weeks Roses... [the article is illustrated with photos of 'Scentimental', 'George Burns', and 'Betty Boop'.]
[From Botanica's Roses, p. 677:] Carruth has been raising roses since the 1980s with Weeks Roses Inc., Ontario, California...
