The region of Alsace (Elsass) was part of Germany from 1870 - 1918.

[From Bulletin - Société académique du Bas-Rhin pour le progrès des sciences, des lettres, des arts et de la vie économique, 1891, p. 79:] ...two rose growers, one from Bischwiller, Mr. J. B. Schmitt, the other from Strasbourg, Mr. Färber, have established two beautiful rose gardens. The range of the former contains 500 standard roses and many dwarfs, most of them correctly labeled. Besides these we saw some novelties obtained by M. Schmitt via artificial fertilization: these are five different varieties of rosa polyantha sarmentosa, of which the mother, belonging to the class of climbing roses....

[From Jahrbuch der Deutschen Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft, 1891, p. 308:] 75 Marks monetary prize and bronze award medal, Directory-Nr. 2392, J. B. Schmitt, Bischweiler, for roses and novelties.

[From Rosenzeitung, 1896, p. 17:] Mr. Schmitt in Bischweiler sent me the roses already six years ago for assessment; two years later I saw them at the Exhibition in Strasbourg. It is only to be wondered that so much time had to pass before...
