Plant explorer and collector, Robert Fortune was born on 16 September 1812 in Kello, Berwickshire, Scotland. He is credited with having discovered over 120 new species of plants. He made 4 trips to China and Japan in the mid-1800s -- the Chinese called him Sing Wah. After retiring to London, where he lived for several years, he returned to Scotland and died in 1880.



In 1842, Robert Fortune was Superintendent of the Hothouse Dept. of the garden of the Horticultural Society of London.
