Jennifer Stackhouse. A Family of Roses.
Recently I delved into a bit of family and garden history. My great grandfather, G. H. E. Heers (George Heers, 1873-1956) was a rose grower and breeder in Queensland. George Heers wasn't only a rose grower and nurseryman. He started his working life as a delivery boy at a grocery store in Ipswich west of Brisbane. He soon found his niche in dairying and rose through the ranks of the Queensland public service to become the Director of Dairying for Queensland in 1933. ...'Grandfather' as he is always called in the family.....Grandfather bred his own roses selecting for heat tolerance for the subtropical Queensland conditions. ....the nursery was grandfather's, but held in his sons' names - C. W. (Cliff) and A. C. Heers. This was to avoid any conflict of interest as he was a public servant....
