My plant needs some TLC and blooms should be upright, about 6 years old now. Mine usually nods but has done well considering it's gotten little care and no water but rain last 3 years or so. I thought it looked pretty with the gypsophilia paniculata, the perennial variety (similar to what florists use) I started from seed 6 or so yrs ago now, one plant left of 5 or 6 but doing well, getting fuller, blooms prettier, requires alkaline soil to flower. This is from the 1928 issue of the American Rose Annual. The caption below the picture says:
PLATE I. The Novelty Rose, TALISMAN, H.T., described on page 208. Illustration supplied, courtesy of A. N. Pierson, Inc.
This is what it says on page 208:
The New Florists' Rose, Talisman
(see colored frontispiece furnished by courtesy of A.N. Pierson, inc.)
TALISMAN is Mr. Montgomery's latest production, and as seen by the Editor is a most attractive and distinct rose of what is usually called the "novelty" type, for want of a better designation. The colored plate gives a fair idea of its first-day color, and as it aged, its beauty seemed not to diminish, though it changed. Whatever its value for the greenhouse trade--and it ought to be great--we are hopping that it soon escapes into the garden and there proves as pleasing.
The parentage is Ophelia X Souv. de Claudius Pernet. The rose averages twenty-five petals, opens pleasingly, and lasts well. The foilage is full and good, and the unusually long calyx-lobes are very decorative.
