My first garden was planting seedling trees in my parents backyard. They were so angry they had the gardeners take them all out. Ha! 50 years later there is a magnificent flaming yellow fall time Sugar Maple shading a large concrete patio. In the side hedging, there now grows a 50 year old stately White Oak Tree.
I followed this by hacking out a 1/2 acre space alongside a large garden pathway, and designed and planted a lovely Japanese garden, with concrete bench, and a small snow viewing lamp. I planted Bambusa for zone 7 that grew to 35’ high and creaks wonderfully in the wind. I was
13 . This was my first real commission.
NOTE I revisited the garden around 25 years later. The Bamboo had spread beautifully, through an adjacent 20 acres, and then UNDERNEATH a 6 lane road into the woodland and roadside areas. I learned that this site has become a popular one with tourists from Japan and other tropical areas in the world, Singapore to Taiwan. It is a chance to see a Bamboo forest, walk amongst the culms and listen to the sounds echoing. I don't know when it will go into flower and the entire forest will die, but for this moment it is a wonder.
I studied biology and botany all through public school and got certified in Horticulture; flowers from import and designing with. Plant propagation and from Azaleas to Zebrinas. I worked a monastery cold house fertilizing little spring flowers for the industry. I have a microbiology degree(s) from UNM and White Plains Hospital SUNY. All life to me is understood on a molecular level and innate biological characteristics. I often think to myself, what would a Neanderthal do in this situation? I worked with National Arboreteum testing Elm trees for Dutch Elm Disease resistance. Mike Shade has created some nice var. that are showing healthy growth. I also worked at Merry Gardens crossing Geraniums, that was in Bangor ME. Leaf oil fragrance is now part of my plant id’g. lol.
I have published many plant oriented stories that are still in publication. I would like to write more. You can read a few of them at Daves Garden under Sheri Williams. Let me know what you think.
I hope this is not my last garden.
October 2021- I have been attempting rose growing here in Michigan for the last 5 long long years.. I am sewing little winter coats for them. More have passed away than the amount I bought and planted. When I call the companies with my million questions….the operator tells me the customer service people are all out to lunch, or on vacation…
When I plant a bunch of super fragrant roses, my buddies tell me horror stories of how they were unable to use their front door there were so many bees. Now I have 12 fabulously fragrant roses planted by the entryway garden. lol. My kitchen steps and door has Kiss Me Kate a large arching climber with fragrant big blooms. But my Kiss Me Kate is not a generous bloomer. Sparse is the best description.
