Page 9: Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) painted portraits of roses of his time. The original may be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. They include 'Red Provence' R. gallica officinalis
Page 27: In Rosa gallica officinalis, 'Versicolor', 'Conditorum', and 'Tuscany' we are looking at unsophisticated early cultivated forms.
Page 34: Officinalis (Rosa gallica maxima) Sometimes called 'Splendens', also known as 'Red Damask' (see Chapter 13 re: confusion over the name of 'Red Damask'), gave us the sport 'Rosa Mundi', 'The Apothecary's Rose' and also probably the 'Red Rose of Lancaster'. Much-branched, strong suckering proclivities when on its own roots. Blossoms: semi-double, light crimson, yellow stamens. Probably the oldest cultivated form of R. gallica.

Assemblage de Beautes ('Rouge Éblouissante') France, 1823. A compact bush, very few real thorns, and rich green leaves which make a hard contrast to the startling, extremely vivid blooms. At first they are of intense cerise-crimson, later becoming flushed with purple, and the multitudes of small petals reflex into a ball, revealing a small green point in the middle of a hard button eye. It creates an amazing picture in flower, and makes an excellent contrast to some of the softer tones, such as 'Anais Segales' and intensifies the purple and murrey tones of 'Tuscany' and others of that tint. This is the rose one finds labelled 'Ponceau' in some collections. "Poppy-coloured" is a slight exaggeration, but it is certainly a vivid piece of colour. 4 feet.
(Nov 1994)  Page(s) 239.

Auguste Gervais Barbier, France, 1918... First-class foliage and large flowers... coppery flame-pink on the reverse which makes a splendid contrast to the bland creamy-apricot on the inside of the petals... always beautiful in hot weather... Has a long flowering season...
