In his Introduction to the American Rose Annual of 1935, J. Horace McFarland sums up twenty years of having served as Editor of the Annual by saying, "The twice-ten volumes of the American Rose Annual comprise an up-to-date rose cyclopedia including, in all, 4,169 pages, written by 697 devoted rose-friends living all over civilization and its fringes." He refers to rose-lovers all over the world as "this grand army of rose-friends."
