Is Perlite for You covering the soil to prevent the soil (and seedlings) from drying out? I use it to drain and aerate the soil in the pots with roses, to prevent roots to rot.

No, Jay-Jay, it's part of the mix. I used half pulverised peat moss and half perlite for the seed mix. Inevitably because the perlite is light more ends up on top when I water. I tried a little bit of vermiculite in the mix at some point but I don't really like this because it seems to go to mush.
I transplanted these seedlings today into their own tube stock pots using 1/3 of this same mix, 1/3 regular potting mix, and 1/3 bonsai soil. This seems to work for me so far. The bonsai soil has sand in it which seems to help with the drainage as well as giving some structure to the mix. It's just something I worked out when my earliest seedlings died or didn't thrive in the regular potting mix.
I'm really only dabbling. There are probably better ways available.
Here's a photo of one the seedlings transplanted into its new mix, to show you what it looks like.

Looking good! I ween then when they are having 3 normal leaves.
