Origin:

Bred by Henry Bennett (United Kingdom, 1879).
Introduced in Australia by Robert Rattray's Rosebank Nursery in 1894 as 'Duke of Connaught'.

Class:

Hybrid Perpetual, Hybrid Tea.

Bloom:

Carmine-red, red edges. None to mild fragrance. 45 petals. Very large, very full (41+ petals) bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Large, long buds.

Habit:

Short.

Growing:

USDA zone 6b and warmer. Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that.

Parentage:

President (tea, Paul, 1860) × Louis van Houtte (hybrid perpetual, Lacharme 1869)

Notes:

Bennett always speaks of using the 'President' in his crosses, not 'Adam'. The synonmyity of these two is questionable. It is more probable that Bennett used the rose marketed by Paul in England since 1860 than the much earlier Tea by Adam.
