In 1974 'Picasso' was succeeded by 'Old Master'. This is a vigorous grower, with large semi-double flowers; the carmine and white pattern upon them is dramatic. As in all 'Picasso's successors to date, the foliage is dark and glossy. In this case the parents are given as {['Evelyn Fison' x ('Tantau's Triumph' x R. X coryana)] x ('Hamburger Phoenix' x 'Danse du Feu')} x ['Evelyn Fison' x ('Orange Sweetheart' x 'Fruhlingsmorgen')].

Sam McGredy. A Hand-Painted Family Tree.
MACfundad on 'Maxi' gave me the important 'Old Master'. It combines the health of 'Maxi' with the exotic plum-red markings of the hand-painted type.

p28. Review of Newer Roses - 1975-76 Season.
'Old Master' Claret red/silver. 12 reports. I year; 70cm; N.R.S. 7.7. Gisborne: Draws visitors every time. Like all this series, closes up at night and in cool cloudy weather to show paler reverse, fascinating. Bay of Plenty: Has flowered continually. Very exciting. Kaiapoi: A charmer. Quick repeat. A real conversation piece on healthy, low wiry growth.

Adaptability too, belongs to Sam McGredy's hand painted series and 1975 has brought him many awards for these. With every new trial I find myself searching to see what new ones Sam McGredy has created for us and I'm intrigued and fascinated with what is entered and the new qualities each brings: the attractive foliage, the texture and colour of .... 'Old Master'. 'Old Master' is in claret with a silver edge, a silver reverse and a silver eye, an arresting colour effect..... 'Old Master' has been flowering non stop for six weeks from the first week in November, and still new growth is coming. What a rose! I saw it exhibited for the first time in the floribunda classes at the New South Wales spring show in late October. The exhibitor, a keen floral artist told me how much she enjoyed using it in period arrangements with the large pink single 'Sparrieshoop'. She recommended planting the hand-painted roses in dappled shade; the markings are much more distinct in a cooler situation.

'Old Master'. Fl. Dense bushy healthy plants act as the perfect foil for the dark claret-red flowers edged in white. A very striking rose with a difference. Flowers very early.

Stelvio Coggiatti, Rose Trials in Rome, Italy.
Old Master Certificate of Merit. Introduced by Sam McGredy (New Zealand). The large, semi-double flowers are representative of the new style started with 'Picasso'. Eighteen broad, half-cupped petals with an inner purple-red splash, mahogany-red, semi-glossy foliage admirably matching the flowers. Uncommon, decorative, vitreous thorns densely set. Compact, balanced growth.

'Old Master' ('Maxi' x seedling). Another hand-painted floribunda from Sam McGredy, more vigorous and upright-growing than 'Picasso', with deep carmine flowers with a white eye, petal edge and reverse. The petals are noticeably wavy-edged, which gives the flowers a most distinctive appearance. Foliage is dark and glossy and I thought very highly of this variety but it was attacked by blackspot late in the 1973 growing season. The award was given in 1973 when it was unnamed.

'Old Master' - Dark velvet claret-red, The colour of 'Roger Lambelin" on a densely bushy, healthy plant with dark olive green foliage which serves as a perfect foil for the richly coloured flowers. A striking new variety from Sam McGredy,
