For those in Zone 5 who are looking for a climber, you can't do better than Ramblin' Red. I have had this for 3 years and it just keeps getting better. No winter damage yet, even with no protection. No blackspot, no mildew. Japanese beetles ignore it. This summer it reached over ten feet.

Hi, I've purchased one (Ramblin Red) to be planted in Northfield, IL. Clay, but amended soil. I am planning on cutting lattice for a trellis and debating how big to make it. Can you tell me this plant's growing habit as well. Thanks for info! Noreen Edwards

Hello, I am interested in a hardy non-spray red climber for my zone 5-6 area (Midwest).
One consideration is that the prickles/thorns not be too numerous or sharp, because the rose is to cover an arbor under which people and dogs pass regularly. Is Ramblin' Red particularly prickly/thorny? Thanks in advance.

Claire, Ramblin Red is quite thorny but if you can get past that it is an excellent climber. I'm in zone 4 and can't believe how hardy it is without any winter protection.

You might like Quadra. It is another hardy red climbing rose.

I am looking for a climbing red rose that has a good vase life. How long does Ramblin Red last in a vase? One of its parents, Henry Kelsey, worked very well in my zone 5 garden but their was only a flush of flowers in early summer followed by a lighter flush in late summer. The bloom itself wasn't very pretty.
