In a garden where every rose seems to want to be at least a few meters tall, 'Don Juan' is a full contrarian. The first climber I ever planted, 6 years ago, it's got no canes over a meter long. My other climbers are only 3 to 4 years old, but ramblers, LFCs, HT Cl.s , even Polyantha or Floribunda Cl.s alike all have at least three meter canes already, as do the bigger Austins like Falstaff or CPMag.
On the other hand, it's been more or less in bloom since planted and is usually full of big beautiful roses.
'Scuse my cluelessness, but has anyone heard of climbers sporting downwards?

It's not unknown. See 'Félicité et Perpétue' and it's sport, 'White Pet'.

I purchased Don Juan potted rose last season from a local grower. I absolutely love this rose!!! I love it so much i purchase another for this growing season. The beautiful velvety petals makes you want to just stare at it. The fragance was stronger toward the end of the season, but thats probably because the rose was young. It rooted very quickly and started to cover my arbor in little time. This rose is not affected by heat or chilly temps (it was still flowering the end of nov). The rebloom time is very quick and the blooms are plenty. Don Juan last in a vase and on the vine. I will update to its winter hardiness in zone 6 when it breaks dormancy in a few weeks.

do the blooms stay bright red, or do they turn purplish like a lot of other red roses do? (e.g. Mr. Lincoln, Oklahoma, etc.)

I've never observed 'bluing' on Don Juan. I have sometimes seen the tips of the petals darken through dark maroon toward black. Not sure if it has anything to do with aging or drying out. Sometimes I think it enhances the look, but often I think it detracts. In any case, if you can grow it in a warm and sunny location and protect it from blackspot, it can become a quick favorite.
