Grand Duchesse Charlotte (Garden & Decorative) This fairly recent addition is a splendid rose on garden and decorative counts, with vigorous growth and healthy foliage. The colour is unusual, but appealing, outer petals reddish brown with bright red inside. Somewhat resembles the older variety ‘Padre’, but it is fuller in petalage. Habit 3. (HT)

Grand Duchess Charlotte Bud very long pointed, chestnut color; flower exceptionally large, double, full, unusually lasting, bright tomato red, shaded geranium red on long strong stem.

Grande Duchesse Charlotte: For a year or two I have fought shy of this, not being too sure that I would like the colour, which sounded rather odd. However, Mr. Clark praised it, and then I saw it listed as one of the three All-American Rose selections for 1943, so I took the risk and am not sorry. It looks very promising. The colour is very unusual—a sort of claret-red. The bud is long and perfectly shaped, and the open bloom very pleasing. Growth was also very fair for the first year; I like it.

Grande Duchesse Charlotte: A light petalled decorative that is very attractive, the colour being tomato-red shaded crimson. Good grower, with blooms carried erect on beautiful long stems.

Grande Duchesse Charlotte from unhappy Luxembourg will, in all probability, be the last Rose to come from the old Ketten firm. The plants studied were of only medium height, and were very willowy with slender canes. Beautiful long copper-coloured buds opened to almost flat flowers of coppery red, at which stage they were very attractive, but, like all the coppers, ageing was ungraceful. They have about thirty petals, and a fruity fragrance adds to the cut flowers' value.

Grand Duchess Charlotte is a curious colour, and has a brownish shading on red. I should like to see a few more petals, but still it will make a fine decorative Rose.

Nonin and Grand Duchess Charlotte, also in this class, do not, I think, compare as favourably as Marie Claire... Grand Duchess Charlotte seems also to be a good grower and is a very striking colour, but rather loose petalled.

New Roses 1940. Grand Duchesse Charlotte  (HT. Ketten 1938)  3. Outer petals reddish brown with a bright red inner face. The growth is vigorous and healthy, while the blooms are somewhat after the style of 'Padre', but with more petals. E. 2/6 each.

Grand Duchess Charlotte (Ketten) This variety varies in colour between 'Charles P. Kilham' and 'Padre', with 20 large and nearly as many smaller petals. The growth is good, but on present performances the sort must improve to justify a place in future lists.

Grand Duchesse Charlotte, H.T. (Ketten, Luxembourg).-The colour is a deep and brilliant orange, orient red, very similar to Charles P. Kilham, but the colour is more intense. The petals, which number 25 to 30, are wide and of stiff texture. The growth is vigorous and free, with long stems, and the foliage in appearance resembles Charles P. Kilham.

New Roses 1940.  Grand Duchesse Charlotte (HT. Kétten 1938) The outer petals are reddish brown showing a bright tomato red interior when the blooms open. The size and shape are good, while the variety has excellent lasting qualities. Vigorous bushy growth and large glossy green leaves resistant to all diseases. 4/- each.
So far vigorous growth appears to be the main quality.
