Victoria Mary ("Vita") Sackville-West, The Hon. Lady Nicolson (March 9, 1892 Knole House - June 2, 1962, Sissinghurst Castle), English authoress and garden designer. She was the role model for Virginia Woolf's "Orlando". Her articles and books on gardening enjoyed immense popularity.

[From A Heritage of Roses, by Hazel le Rougetel, p. 132:] In the early 1950s... a gardening column started to appear each Sunday in The Observer and over a period of fifteen years, Vita Sackville-West contributed her articles, many on old roses.
