[From The Book on Roses, by Dr. G. Griffin Lewis, p. 136:] W. A. Manda of South Orange, N.J., was born near Prague, Bohemia, on November 11, 1862.

[From Roses and How to Grow Them, by Dr. J. Horace McFarland, p. 129:] W. Albert Manda, a great plantsman of South Orange, New Jersey, is credited with the introduction of some 15 Hybrid Wichuraiana climbers, of which 'Gardenia' and 'Evergreen Gem' yet [McFarland was writing in 1929] remain in commerce and in gardens. One of these Hybrids, 'Jersey Beauty', has been used abroad as a parent for other advanced climbing roses, particularly the lovely but not universally hardy yellow beauty, 'Emily Gray'.

[From M.H. Horvath's Place in Rose History, by Dr. J. Horace McFarland, p. 169:] Some of the Wichuraiana varieties which had been improperly credited to W.A. Manda were rather the result of [M.H. Horvath's] efforts... for example, 'Evergreen Gem' and 'Universal Favorite'...
