'First Prize' rose Reviews & Comments

I guess I'm in the minority, as I've just taken it out of my garden. Compared to the other hybrid teas I have, First Prize had a problem with mildew, and it was stingy with blossoms. I've replaced it with a cutting of Rose Rhapsody. I'll know in 2011 if this was a smart move, but I think it will be! (zone 10a southern California)

Out of about 80 roses, even one bloom on this one is still a showstopper. On a 20 year old plant the blooms are about 7 inches across/, with many of its petals easily 2 1/2 inches at the base. The color is dark pink on the outside of the petals, and the bloom looks darker around the outside gradually becoming light pink in the center. After it is spent in really hot summer sun it fades to a painted looking pink and acquires a charming globe-like shape.

I just love the special pink color and high centered form blooms on this First Prize Rose bush but the mildew and black spot was terrible even when I sprayed. However, we did have a VERY unusual wet Spring and Summer this past year. Is there another rose bush that has the look of this rose in color and shape but that is disease resistant?

'First Prize' was my very first rose. Altho' the rose itself was simply beautiful, all I can say is that in my garden it was a poor specimen of a plant. My own preference is to have a solid plant with a pretty roses. Why bother with weak, disease prone plants when there are so many other fine roses to be grown and not enough space ?

PS. It was also the first rose I shovel pruned.
