Six years old or so. Grown from seed collected off wild specimen next to a friend's apartment complex. Blooms end of June to beginning of July. Will rust when conditions favour the disease. Slight, fresh musk scent in newly opened flowers. The bees just love it!

If a bush of setigera produces hips, it is a female plant. Blooming setigera plants not producing hips are male. Most dioecious species have separate pollen and seed-producing flowers but setigera has an additional deception, called “cryptic”. The male and female flowers look exactly the same, both having anthers and pistils but the pollen of female flowers is sterile and the pistils on male flowers will not function.

The "Bristly Rose" showing "setigerous" (stalked) glands on the sepals, hips and pedicel for which Rosa setigera was named by the French botanist André Michaux. My plant was collected in Sumner County, Tennessee in 1986. Photographed June 29, 2021 at Rose Woods in the Mayacmas Mtns. near Petrified Forest, California.

All roses have what are called “perfect flowers” meaning each blossom has both male and female parts. But setigera is the only rose in the whole world known to be dioecious. That means it has separate male and female plants.

June 24, 2015. The wild plant I collected seeds from. Despite a lack of scent to my nose, bees seem to love this.
