Vigorous; climber, with strong stems, but easy to train; healthy; foliage fairly abundant, glossy, middle to deep green; flowers scarlet to crimson, fading crimson purple with age; semi-double, with about 23 petals, loose centre, soon opening from good bud form to diameter 3ins; profuse summer flush, with good amount of later flower to autumn; flowers in clusters of about 7 both on side shoots and young main shoots; weather resistance fair; scent faint. Raised by Charles Mallerin, Isere, France. Introduced 1954. Parentage: ‘Paul’s Scarlet Climber x R. multiflora seedling. Name in USA is ‘Spectacular’.
