p138.  Miss Pat Mason, Auckland N.Z.
Karl Herbst will find many friends with its well-formed exhibition blooms of scarlet with crimson reverse; the colour may be considered a little dull in comparison with many of our modern red roses, but the quality is superb.  The foliage is highly resistant to disease. Moderate fragrance was noted.

When I first saw Mme. A. Meilland I remarked that it was a yellow and pink replica of Wiliam Orr. Last Winter I planted Karl Herbst, hailed as a "red Mme. A. Meilland" - almost the reverse of my statement regarding William Orr.  So far, this seems good "sales talk" for while Karl Herbst is a first class exhibition rose, it must lose points as a garden or decorative variety because its colour is a pale and rather dull shade, and it burns badly in hot dry weather.

Karl Herbst: The big, well-formed, show blooms are of the slightly blunted type. By present-day standards, the colour of this red rose is a little dull. Good growth and free blooming. We will probably see it on the show bench frequently, but I would prefer quite a few others as garden roses.

Harry H. Hazlewood.  The New Roses of 1951.  The outstanding variety for 1951 is Karl Herbst (Kordes, 1950). This is a fully double exhibition type with large scarlet red blooms of superb shape with a slightly lighter shade on reverse of petal. It has been described overseas as a Red 'Mme. A. Meilland' (Peace) but some might suggest this is sales propaganda. Its quality however may be estimated by the fact that it won the N.R.S. Gold Medal in London recently. Unfortunately it has very little fragrance.
