Bred by Unknown French Breeder(s) (France, before 1817).
Introduced in Australia by Exotic Nursery (Australia) in 1866 as 'Dometille Becard'.

Bloom:

White and pink, stripes. [Mauve or purple blend, stripes.]. Strong fragrance. Average diameter 2". Medium to large, very double, cupped bloom form. Once-blooming spring or summer.

Habit:

Upright, well-branched. Large, matte foliage. 3 to 5 leaflets.

Height: 39" to 6' (100 to 185cm). Width: up to 4' (up to 120cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 4b through 9b. Vigorous. Prune after flowering is finished.

Joyce Demits at Tanglewood Farms says Village Maid, the Gallica, has very double, two-inch flowers of pale pink, streaked dark rose...
Several references refer to apparently different roses. See also Rosa provincialis variegata
Verrier describes some confusion with a number of other roses, including 'Village Maid' [Rosa Gallica, p. 107]
Brent Dickerson reports that Thomas River's 1837 catalog lists a Gallica 'Village Maid' as already in England, a variety which thus pre-dates both Vibert's 'Village Maid' of 1845 and Vibert's 'Belle Villageoise' of 1839.
