"Roses and the frost at Stamford" by Charles Laxton
During the nights of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th of January my thermometer registered here, in a walled garden at five feet from the ground, and in the open, 23°, 21°, 22°, and 22° of frost respectively... The snow here froze on the branches, and was three inches deep on the ground.... My list of uninjured (No. 1) may therefore be relied upon as containing only thoroughly hardy sorts.

Rosiers hybrides remontants nouveaux qui seront mis au commerce de l'automne 1864 au printemps de 1865.
1° Gains de M. Eugène Verdier, fils aîné, de Paris.
Docteur Andry. — Arbuste vigoureux; fleurs larges, bien pleines, très-bien faites, cupuliformes profondes, organes sexuels visibles et d'un épanouissement toujours aisé; coloris cramoisi pourpré et cramoisi-rose; odeur suave. Fort belle variété.
Ces trois derniers Rosiers sont aussi florifères que les précédents.

Translation: New Hybrid Perpetuals put into commerce from autumn of 1864 to spring of 1865.
1) Novelties bred by Mr. Eugène Verdier, fils aîné, of Paris.
Docteur Andry. — A vigorous shrub; flowers are large, quite full and very well formed, being deeply cup-shaped; reproductive organs are visible; the flowers always open easily; the color is purple crimson with crimson-pink; sweetly fragrant. An exceptionally handsome variety.
These last three roses are more floriferous than those preceding them.

This year M. Eugène Verdier, rue Dunois, no. 3, Paris, gives a free premium to each subscriber of his full collection of new roses, which consists of the following 8 varieties:
...Docteur Andry, (hybrid perpetual), very vigorous, full, to 12 centimetres diameter, very vivid dark carmine-red.
