Bred by Charles Mallerin (France, before 1943). Bred by Francis Meilland (1912-1958) (France, 1943).
Introduced in France by Meilland et Cie in 1943 as 'Congo'.
Class:
Hybrid Tea, Pernetiana.  
Bloom:
Dark red, brown shading, scarlet shading.  Mild to strong fragrance.  Medium, double (17-25 petals), open bloom form.  Blooms in flushes throughout the season.  
Habit:
Short, bushy.  Leathery foliage.  
Growing:
USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).  
Patents:
Patent status unknown (to HelpMeFind).
Notes:
In the 1944 reference Mallerin is cited as the breeder and Meilland as the introducer.
