Richard Francis Burton was born in Torquay, England, on March 19, 1821. He provided the original translation of The Arabian Nights (The Book of the Thousand and One Nights, 1885-88), stories that originated in the Middle East and were known as far back as the 10th Century. Burton was knighted in 1886. He died in Trieste on October 20, 1980. After his death his wife burned most of his diaries and journals, apparently because of the erotic content of most of the material.
