It have a fair amount of big thorns, well spaced. Is not horrid like a moss at least but I would not tag this rose as thornless.

I wouldn't either. Thanks pvaldes. We've noted that it is thorny.

This one was/is continuously (prolific) flowering this year, whilst almost all the other Austins took a break during the heat and draught period.

I guess that is all the Pernetiana influence in it. It s first blooms opened during the horrific heat wave that is starting to break, the flowers did not burn, but they sure faded! Still attractive, and very, very fragrant- fruity with a herbal, lemon note

As for the scent, Aloha as one of the parents makes sense! It can bloom as early as the 20th of may. And yes, they can fade. This rose has many faces. And is a very good climber too!

Stunning, large fragrant blooms but plagued by blackspot in my garden. Still, I keep it just for those flowers...

The reason I removed Abe Darby from my collection is that that blooms do not like the rain. Where the summers are warmer and drier than the sort that we sometimes get in the UK, this rose is great... Lovely size, colour and scent... I simply got tired of balling, brown-edged blooms and having them fall off in a matter of a couple short days. Just not worth the effort.
Also, Abe is best as a climber or trained in some way as he becomes a rather prostrate octopus otherwise. I had him trained on an obelisk in the US where he was lush and lovely with glowing health.

I have some roses very badly affected by balling, Souvenir de la Malmaison is the worst of course, but is not really a problem with Abraham Darby. Huge and heavy flowers, nice colors from orange to rose, and lovely fruited scent... sometimes. Flowers often look down, in rain or sun, it doesn't matter. Is a pleasure to dig my nose in its buds and is a beauty in a vase.
