Modern Roses 10 says this rose is an old variety that was taken to eastern Canada by early settlers; its real name is lost. It suffers some dieback but survives Manitoba winters without protection..
Elliott & Pittao notes: University of Saskatchewan, referenced in WCSH History [Pittao], Frank Skinner was quoted by Roscoe Fillmore (1959) that it was an Old Garden Rose from eastern Canada that did well on the prairies.
