What Next?
Visitors to European and perhaps our own Trial Grounds may expect to see soon Sam McGredy IV's new seedling strain which bears the nickname 'The Hand Painted Rose'. It is a rose with bi-coloured petals and no two blooms on a bush are the same. A whole series has been raised, some with red and white flowers, some purple and white, some red brown, brown and yellow, orange and silver, and crimson and silver. The names for these cultivars are not yet decided ....
Enquiries concerning the origin received rather non-committal replies but the original is said to be described as a third generation spinosissima hybrid and a suggestion is 'Fruhlingsmorgen' [('E. G. Hill' x 'Catherine Kordes') x Rosa spinosissima altaica], 'Orange Sweetheart' ('Pinnochio' seedling x 'Fashion') and 'Lavender Pinnochio' ('Pinnochio' x 'Grey Pearl') are in the make-up.
Sam McGredy says he aims to make it a world beater and it will tease people along. This is the first time we have had something to plug all over the world'.
