Leonard Hollis, England.  The Twelve Best Recruits, 1969-72.
'Fountain' is the only shrub rose to have won the President's International Trophy and a Gold Medal (1971). Quite apart from this it is perhaps in a class of its own. During the years I have seen it at the Trial Ground I have been much impressed by the fact that it never seems to be without flowers throughout the season. The colour is a rich blood red and the large petals have that velvety texture so much prized in dark red roses. The flowers are large, shapely at first opening loosely, moderately full and carry some fragrance, although this is not strong. They are produced both singly and in clusters on strong growth. The foliage is abundant, semi-glossy and red-tinted when young. A display bed of this magnificent Tantau seedling (of unknown parentage), planted with another award winner, 'Goldbonnet', is doing remarkably well in its first season at St. Albans.

E. F. Allen, Awards To New Rose Seedlings In Great Britain In 1971.
The President's International Trophy and a Gold Medal were awarded to Fountain,  a very remarkable shrub bred by Tantau, who has not revealed its parentage. The small clusters of large, semi-double, blood red flowers made a fine display at the end of June and, on six subsequent visits, I never saw it out of flower. The foliage is splendidly healthy and the flowers scented. I thought the award well earned and look forward to the time when I can plant a specimen in my own garden.
