First rose plant to bloom in my garden on the first day of May, 2022, SE England. This bud has been a long time in the making and we have had spells of rather low temperatures during April, which I suppose accounts for the unusually high petal count. This is a rose whose flowers, even in their normal single form, are well-scented with a typicalsweet red rose scent, coming not from the stamens but from the petals. On this double bloom, the fragrance is (because of the petal count) particularly strong.

Occitanie, France, grafted. I was fascinated by Hamanasu's close ups and planted it in December 2020. Red new growth.

Larger blooms this year, and also more consistently scented. SE England, May 2020.

Red is notoriously difficult to photograph: as often as not, I need to digitally manipulate the photographs to make them look close to the real-life colour. Not on this overcast summer day, though: this is just how the picture came out at the first click, and the likeness is pretty accurate. Aug 2021, SE England.

As with other single roses, the petals close up for the night. Today we had an overcast, cool and breezy day after the glorious (and unusually lasting) sunshine of the last several days: all the flowers on Sweet Sultan (which were wide open yesterday) decided to stay shut and not bother for the day. May 2020 SE England.
