Golden State HT (Meilland). Deep golden yellow, 50 petals, of Ville de Paris type of bloom, but growth moderate in comparison with that variety.  Awarded Gold Medal, Bagatelle, and very highly spoken of overseas, but so far has only “promised” this season.  The colour is good but despite the number of petals the blooms open quickly.

p120-4  Mr. G. W. Heers.  Roses in Queensland.
Golden State HT.  A golden yellow, veined carmine on the outside, which came to us with glowing testimonials.  This variety has so far completely failed to come up to the raiser’s description and looks like a failure in our State.

Golden State HT Yellow (Meilland ’37).  Pat. App. For  ARA ’38.
McGinnes Pa. (1 pl, 1 yr.) reports a yellow rose on a vigorous, healthy plant;  flowers very double and of unfading golden yellow.   Edmunds, Ore, (6 pl., 2 yr.) calls it a real  “Gold Medal” yellow rose, with  a fine plant, superb foliage and splendid blooms.  At Breeze Hill  we had very double flowers (60 petals) of soft, creamy yellow, and a pleasing mild fragrance.  It looks quite promising to us.

Golden State HT (F. Meilland, 1937; Intro in U.S., by Conard Pyle Co., 1938)  Plant Patent  applied for. Souv. de Claudius Pernet x (Charles P. Kilham x unnamed seedling).  Bud ovoid; flower large, very double, cupped, exceptionally lasting buff-yellow with Mikado orange heart, on long stem.  Foliage leathery, glossy.  Very vigorous, upright; profuse, continuous bloomer all season.  Gold Medals; Contest for Most Beautiful Rose of France 1937; Best Rose of French Origin, Bagatelle 1937; Portland 1937.

R. Marion Hatton. New Roses in America.
Golden State is the first offering of a new hybridizer, Francis Meilland, of France.  The flowers were of medium size, pale yellow, slightly flushed pink, the centre a mass of short petals around a Pernet centre.  I noted 55 petals and a peculiar scent.  The plants were only fair.  I am afraid of yellow Pernetiana, and want to study it another year.

New Roses for 1938 by European and Other Raisers
Raisers' Descriptions
Golden State (Hybrid Tea) (F. Meilland).—Superb golden yellow, veined carmine on the exterior. There is more red in the bud, which is very elegant and carried on a long stiff stem. The flower, which is large and full, is of perfect form, and has large solid petals. Agreeably fragrant. The growth is very vigorous, with reddish wood, and few thorns, furnished with beautiful bronze-green foliage. This splendid variety by reason of its beauty, its floriferousness, and above all, its grand erect growth, is a great successs as a garden Rose, or for cutting. The name has been conferred on it by the Committee of the famous San Francisco Exhibition, a particular honour: adjudged "The Most Beautiful Rose of France", 1937. Gold Medal, Bagatelle, 1937.

Nouveautés 1937 ... A. MEILLAND, rosiériste, Tassin-les-Lyon (Rhône)
Golden State (Francis MEILLAND 1937).
