'Grey College' rose Reviews & Comments

This Beloved rose runs a close second to the outstanding Veterans' Honor in my zone 6a garden. The pictures shown here on HMF I think do a good job showing the wonderful color and velvety texture, heavy petal substance, and form of the flowers of this rose. They could be a bit bigger and there is no fragrance to my nose. But I think it's outstanding other qualities make up for any shortcomings it may have. The bush itself is vigorous and fairly upright and compact growing. So far it has stayed very healthy with my normal spraying. It is also proved to be winter hardy. This makes an excellent cut flower for the home because of it's excellent substance that it maintains for a long time in the vase. I recommend this as a good exhibition and garden rose as well. As an aside and for what my opinion is worth, I think that J&P changing the name from Cesar E. Chavez to Beloved and trying to dupe the American public into buying it again is unethical and should probably border on illegal, though I guess that they can do whatever they please as they did hybridize the rose to begin with. I would replace this rose if it died with another just like it. I would probably buy another one eventually as I really like it. John

From your description, it sounds almost identical to BLACK MAGIC, which is a 48" tree that gets intense heat here in my SIlicon Valley backyard. I wonder if these two are related???

I love this rose! It's the most beautiful cut-flower rose I've ever had. The stems are very long and after cutting it is very slow to open. The petals are a beautiful dark red and look like velvet. It's healthy and vigorous and fairly disease resistant - the only uncomplimentary thing I can think of to say is that it has very little fragrance.
