Pandemonium ('Claire Rayner', MACpandem) Dwarf cluster-flowered patio. Parentage: 'New Year' x [('Anytime' x 'Eyepaint') x 'Stars 'n' Stripes']. New Zealand 1988. Description and cultivation... reminiscent of old-fashioned, striped roses... streaked and flecked with vibrant orange and yellow...

Pandemonium. MACpandem. Although 'Pendemonium' is classed officially as a Cluster-Flowered Rose, it is really better thought of as a Shrub. It might even be classed as a Hybrid Musk, as along with the tall, arching growth it has the musk scent, if not powerfully.....Its flowers are dazzlingly striped in orange and yellow and the bronze tinted foliage sets them off perfectly. Parentage undisclosed.

Then came Pandemonium. It was something entirely new. This patio rose / small floribunda was named not for its pandemonium of colour - it has bright orange and yellow stripes - but because of the pandemonium of bloom, Sam McGredy said. Again it hasn't been very popular, although the 1991 New Zealand Rose Annual rated it at 7.8, describing it as vigorous and healthy, and the colouring as unusual, but very attractive. it also has an appealing perfume. The blooms look marvellous displayed in a small cane basket and they give a small bouquet of yellow miniatures, such as 'Freegold' or 'Rise 'n' Shine', extra zing..... 'Oranges and 'Lemons' stripes are softer than those of 'Pandemonium'.

Pandemonium MACpandem. McGredy 1988. 'New Year' x [('Anytime' x 'Eyepaint') x 'Stars 'n Stripes']; orange / yellow; 24 reports on 33 plants; 1-5 years; 55cms; 7.4 rating. Variable reports received on this novel patio rose, some like, others not so keen. Unusual orange and yellow striped and flecked blooms of informal shape, produced abundantly on a healthy bush. The bush has a good rounded habit and the flowers produced feather [?further] down the stems. The flowers fade out in the sun and look best at the full open stage. A rose you either like or dislike, but certainly different and a good talking point and is a cheerful little rose.

Pandemonium (MACpandem); McGredy 1988; 'New Year' x [('Anytime' x 'Eyepaint') x 'Stars 'n Stripes']; orange/yellow; 7 reports on 9 plants; 1-3 years; 55cms; 7.0 rating. Variable reports on this one, Waikato and Auckland not impressed as not enough bloom and flowers collapse in head and fade badly. Nelson finds it hard to propagate and it gets blackspot. Wellington has 2 bushes and they are both different, one HT form and other frilly! South Canterbury says it is a cheerful striped novelty.

Pandemonium  Raised by Sam McGredy New Zealand.  An unusual rose reminiscent of old-fashioned striped roses, this is orange and yellow combined, a pandemonium of small flowers produced on a very bushy plant with clear foliage. One of a series of striped and flecked roses being introduced in 1991.

Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses for 1990-91 Season
Pandemonium MACpandem. McGredy 1988; 'New Year' x (('Anytime' x 'Eyepaint') x 'Stars 'n Stripes'); dull orange/yellow; 3 reports on 4 bushes; 1-3 years; 50cm; 7.8 rating. This low growing litle rose makes a great splash of colour, ideal as an edging plant in fact. The colouring is unusual, but very attractive, these three reporters find. It is best when fully open and blooms cover the rounded bush. It is best grown in open sun, too. Foliage is glossy. The bush grows well vigorously and is healthy.

Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses for 1989-90 Season. Floribundas.
Pandemonium. MACpandem; McGredy 1988 ('Anytime' x 'Eyepaint') x 'Stars 'n Stripes'); orange/gold striped; 7 reports; 11 bushes; 1-2 years; 55cm; 7.3 rating. Here we have a gaudy striped cross between a mini and a floribunda. We shall not use the word patio, however. It is different or interesting or odd. It certainly is well named. Most reporters like it for its sheer colours, great floriferousness, though repeat could be faster, and good fragrance. The bush grows well and is healthy. Try it and see. The striped blooms pick very well.

p57 [photo] Pandemonium McGredy 1989. ‘Arcadian’ x (‘Anytime’ x ‘Eyepaint’) x ‘Stars ‘n’ Stripes’. A breakthrough into orange and yellow stripes. The bush is vigorous and flowers freely. Sam McGredy says he’s called it ‘Pandemonium’, not because of the colour combination but because it is covered in bloom.

Pandemonium (MACpandem) from Sam McGredy is an intriguing crusty orange with yellow stripes. Much lower stature than MACgolumb - more in the so-called patio class. Personally I liked this much better than MACgolumb and would like to grow it.
