It was a little slow to repeat flower, the blooms were often pale and insipid in colour, but the plants grew well, and again, quite healthy.

It is important to ensure the change in these new roses remains stable as they can revert to the original rose, even after a few years. Hamilton Gardens, a whisky-coloured sport of 'Paddy Stephens' was launched in 2007. Some say that this rose has the potential to revert back to the colour of 'Paddy Stephens'.

Hamilton Gardens apricot blend) is a sport of 'Paddy Stephens' (coral blend) and was propagated and released by Matthews Nurseries in the last few years. It makes a very nice fully open bloom and a rose in three stages of development.

Meanwhile the seasons were rolling around, another year had gone by and I was aware of another sport from 'Paddy Stephens' which had arisen in Hamilton Gardens. It was quickly introduced onto the New Zealand market. Its name, of course, is Hamilton Gardens with all the great attributes of its parent: health and vigour, and a gorgeous soft creamy apricot colour.

Hamilton Gardens (Macpadspo) Parentage: Sport of 'Paddy Stephens'. Creamy pink-apricot. Breeder: McGredy 2008. Garden: 7.1. Exhibition: 7.0. Height: Medium. Health: 7.5. Fragrance: 3.9. Northland: A ho hum rose, may make a fully open bloom for showing. Bay of Plenty: A lighter cream version of 'Paddy Stephens', vigorous, blooms fade, good vase life, healthy foliage. Waikato: Good potential, very healthy foliage, it has a tendency to be unstable with colour, another bold clean growing rose, tall, reasonable repeat. Matamata: Up and coming rose, but a slow grower, good fully open blooms, good growth, colour quite pale, healthy, blows quickly. Te Awamutu: Very impressed, will be good for showing in all categories. Gisborne: Colour divine but not enough flowers, blows fast, repeats slow. Manawatu: Just like Paddy Stephens apart from colour, well worth growing in any garden, strong grower, healthy, blooms open quickly, repeats well. Another Manawatu reporter suggests not as good as parent Paddy, but healthy. Feilding: Very healthy, lovely bloom at early stages but blows very quickly. Horowhenua: Great, vigorous, very healthy and always in flower, colour washes out too quickly in the heat of summer. Kapiti: Stands out as a garden rose with no apparent faults although blooms have been few. Wairarapa: Robust, delicate colour, healthy. Wellington: Flowers well, good colour, strong stems and repeats well, full open blooms. Marlborough: Rapid repeat but blooms mark easily, colour better in cooler weather. Moutere Hills: Lovely form at all stages, good clean foliage, holds well. South Canterbury: Lovely rose, great in the garden, very good on show bench, healthy. North Otago, Central Otago: Strong healthy growth, blooms open quickly.

Hamilton Gardens came into the top ten for the first time. .... 'Hamilton Gardens' is the brand new sport of 'Paddy Stephens'. From its first report for the Review of Newer Roses it appears to have a lot of potential to be an outstanding variety.

Hamilton Gardens (MACpadspo) McGredy 2008. 9 Reports. 13 Plants. Garden 6.9. Exhibition 6.9. Medium height. Health 7.5. Fragrance 2.3. Creamy pink/apricot flowers. Northland: Flowers open quickly, but will still make good fully open blooms. Waikato: Lovely colour, apricot tones, robust and easy to grow, very like its parent 'Paddy Stephens', love it. BOP: A creamy, soft apricot, peachy salmon version of 'Paddy Stephens'. Feilding: Not very vigorous in first year, blows quickly, healthy. Wellington: Surprisingly generous and lovely form. South Canterbury: Wonderful new rose, good for showing. Otago: Upright growth, very vigorous, flower colouring rather too pale.
