Notes:
Johann August Sutter (originally: Suter) (February 28, 1803 Bern/Switzerland - June 18, 1880 Washington D.C.), migrated 1834 to California and colonised from 1839 a large region he called New Helvetia in the Sacramento valley. When gold was found on his land in 1848, he was ruined by the chaos of the Gold Rush.
