Bred by Eugène Verdier fils aîne (France, 1861).
Introduced in Australia by Joseph Harris, South Yarra Nurseries in 1865 as 'Wilhelm Pfitzer'.
Class:
Hybrid Perpetual, Hybrid Perpetual, Cl..  
Bloom:
Scarlet, purple shading.  Large, full (26-40 petals), flat bloom form.  Occasional repeat later in the season.  
Habit:
Climbing.  

Height: up to 6'7" (up to 200cm).

Notes:
Dedicated to the nurseryman Wilhelm Pfitzer (January 21, 1821 - July 3, 1905) of Stuttgart, Germany, specialist in Dahlia, Petunias, Pelargonia, Phlox and many rare plants. The company continues to date as "Samen Pfitzer" in Fellbach near Stuttgart.
Said to be very similar to 'Maréchal Vaillant' - see.
