Better Times.- Good grower with clean foliage. Blooms freely. producing good shaped, medium sized flowers. The colour, however, is variable during the life of each bloom.

New roses in America: R. Marion Hatton.
Probably the most important florists’ rose in America today is the cerise sport of “Briarcliff” - “Better Times”. Now we have two red sports of “Better Times” - “Peerless” and “Red Better Times”. They are quite similar and are much like their parent except for their darker colouring. Under glass I can see a profitable future for them, as the “Columbia” family are all good producers. The stems are almost thornless and they have splendid fragrance. In the garden, “Columbia”, “Briarcliff” and “Better Times” are nice at first, but the blooms take on what I call a muddy look, a sort of greyish tinge which is not pleasing. These darker sports may get away from this, but I doubt it.

Hollywood, Premier Suprême Carmelita, Senior et Better Times sont les variétés rouges préférées. Il n'est pas exagéré d'assurer que Better Times, le fameux sport rouge de Briarcliff, entre en compte, comme rose coupée, pour la moitié de la production totale des Etats-Unis. D'ailleurs, nous reverrons cette variété extraordinaire qui ne tardera pas maintenant à siéger dans les serres européennes

C'est ici qu'il est né, il est bien jeune encore, pourtant déjà son élégante silhouette se profile sur des hectares et des hectares. 250.000 sujets sont déjà en pleine production et on lui donne la préférence sans la moindre hésitation au moment de remplacer les serres épuisées.

Harry H. Hazlewood.  The New Roses of 1936. 
In Better Times (J. H. Hill Co.) there is a sport of 'Briarcliff', described by the raiser as brilliant cerise but it is just possible this description is for blooms grown exclusively under glass. By general consent, however, it seems that, since dissemination, 'Better Times' has intensified in colour, and on its performance here Oberthur's colour chart gives the shade as crimson carmine. It will, therefore, be classed in the red section for the present. Its origin is sufficient description and commendation, while the name selected is particularly apt and a happy inspiration. It is interesting to note that this variety scored an immediate success in U.S.A. as a glasshouse proposition, and over 2,000,000 plants are growing under a royalty arrangement by the leading growers, who pay the raiser a fee for each plant propagated for this purpose.
