I must not conclude without mentioning Lady Mary Fitzwilliam, for it is one of the earliest of the Hybrid Teas to bloom, and one must always admire it, even though the growth is so poor. Planted in a bed by itself, as I saw it when the late Henry Bennett first sent it out, it was beautiful. Such diminutive plants, carrying enormous Pæony-like blooms, were a surprise, and they certainly helped to popularise the Hybrid Teas. It was a splendid seed-bearer, and no doubt many of our Hybrid Teas have originated from this marvellous Rose. Rosa.

ON THE DERIVATION OF SOME RECENT VARIETIES OF ROSES. By ARTHUR WILLIAM PAUL.
In this field [of creating Hybrid Teas] British raisers have been eminently successful, some of the earliest varieties having been raised by the late Mr. Henry Bennett, who showed the potentialities of the cross by the introduction of a numerous series, including 'Lady Mary Fitzwilliam', 'Grace Darling', 'Viscountess Folkestone', and others which, although introduced some twenty years ago, still remain in general cultivation. 'Lady Mary Fitzwilliam' -- itself the result of crossing the Tea rose 'Devoniensis' and the Hybrid Perpetual 'Victor Verdier' -- has been largely used as a factor in obtaining new varieties, and we have it on record that two well-known roses, 'Caroline Testout' and 'Antoine Rivoire', were the results of crosses in which the pollen of 'Lady Mary Fitzwilliam' was employed, the seed-bearing parent in the case of 'Caroline Testout' being the Tea rose 'Madame de Tartas', and in the case of 'Antoine Rivoire', the Tea rose 'Dr. Grill'.

[In a history of the development of Hybrid Teas] About 1882 Mr. Bennett gave us that beautiful rose, Lady Mary Fitzwilliam, perfect in its flowers, and so good that its feeble growth notwithstanding, it has held its own in gardens, and is now playing a part as parent in the production of the new hybrid teas, Dickson and Pernet Ducher having both used it as a parent. It was a distinctly marked cross, with the freedom of the teas and the bold flowers of the [hybrid] perpetual. If I recollect rightly, Victor Verdier, an already tea-influenced hybrid perpetual, was one of its parents...
The new hybrid teas of 1893 have some of the defects of Lady Mary Fitzwilliam. Thought beautiful in the flowers, they do not grow strongly enough...
