Editor. 'Lady Mary Fitzwilliam'.
This famous old Rose is one of the ancestors of over 800 varieties of modern Roses growing in the gardens of the world to-day. Unfortunately it appears to be lost to cultivation. Mr. James Gamble, Trustee of the American Rose Foundation, is most anxious to find a plant or to obtain some budwood, if there is still a plant in existence. If any member should know of a plant the Hon. Editor would be grateful if the member would communicate with him.

Wilhelm Kordes, Sparrieshoop, Germany.
Last winter we lost one of our greatest treasures in Sangerhausen; the stock of Lady Mary Fitzwilliam died out. Perhaps the last plants of this famous variety, that is practically the ancestress of all our better strains of garden roses. If there is still a stock of this variety somewhere in the hands of any reader of The Rose Annual I would be much obliged to him for some budwood or grafting wood so that we may fill the empty space again. But I have not much hope.

Another rose which stands out prominently is Lady Mary Fitzwilliam, a pedigree rose introduced in 1882, and one of the parents of Caroline Testout. In 1894 this rose with Dr. Grill produced Antoine Revoire, a rose that is holding its own among the newer Hybrid Teas of today, and is still by far the best rose of its shade in this country. Crossed with La France in 1894, Lady Mary Fitzwilliam gave Mrs. W. J. Grant (syn. Belle Siebrecht), a rose still popular; Kaiserin Augusta Victoria resulted when she was crossed with Coquette de Lyon.
