I know this is an illustration (and not a photo), but what are those things I see on the stem? Which begs the question: how did that dinosaur Devoniensis produce a thornless rose? The first, and only reference to ‘Cornelia Cook’ 1855 being thornless, appeared 49 years later in 1904

Well, it says "almost thornless" and the other pictures don't show any, except maybe one under a leaf?
