Inspiration came from Henry Mitchell who said, This garden was made by doing impractical things we could not afford at the wrong time of year. Oh, how well we can all relate to THAT!
If you're looking for roses that can survive the ravages of Zone 5, check out Wynnie's list. In the past, the person in charge of pruning at the garden has been rather conservative about it -- more or less limiting the activity to shaping and deadheading. Last year, she says she did something different and pruned her English Roses "rather savagely, and they rewarded me by growing twice as tall as ever before and pumping out blossoms until Christmas, so I may have to amend this policy a bit for them."
