The English Flower Garden has since been revised by Graham Stuart Thomas and this edition has a foreword by garden writer, Henry Mitchell. The author, William Robinson, was a man of strong opinions. You will find many strong opinions about gardening throughout the book.
Robinson thought roses that repeat-bloom were the only ones worth growing. As far as classifying roses goes, he said, The attempted classification of Roses into Teas, hybrid perpetuals, etc., is confusing and not sound, as all these Roses are hybrids. What is wanted in the trade and other catalogues is alphabetical lists of the best varieties, without following the absurd attempt at classification.
