Christian Dior is next on the list, and when we consider the competition that it has to meet in this group, its success is even more noteworthy. There are four varieties in this dark red group that could run very closely to top place. This rose has appeared very often on the show bench and has won a number of championship awards and it is probably this fact that has given it a place above others in the dark red group. Some will be disappointed that the foliage is so susceptible to mildew, but even with this fault it is worthy of its place.

Novelty Roses 1960.  Christian Dior. (HT.)  Very deep rich red blooms of good shape and with a delightful fragrant perfume. Medium growth and good foliage. Has won many awards on the Continent. 10/6 each.

Christian Dior HT. (F. Meilland 1958) Beautifully formed large dark red blooms. A faint suggestion of an orange tinge adds brilliance despite the deep colouring. The colour is infinitely better here than in France, Britain and U.S.A. in 1958 when it was not so impressive. It should be a great rose for many years to come. It has scored unusually well at recent English shows, especially for a new variety. This and 'Aztec' are probably the best new red roses for several years and 'Aztec' is hardly a genuine red. A great grower, too.

Christian Dior HT. (Meiland, 1958) Clear, deep, rich glowing red with thirty or more petals. Good sized fragrant blooms, with long stems. Fairly upright good strong growth. Medium height.

— Description : C'est un grand honneur, mais aussi une lourde charge pour une rose, d'avoir à évoquer la mémoire d'un nom prestigieux qui restera longtemps synonyme de maîtrise, sinon de magie, dans le monde de la Haute-Couture. Cependant, la rose DIOR porte allègrement tout le poids d'une telle dédicace. Il n'est que de la contempler, naissant d'un fort bouton globulaire à revers pourpre mat, alors qu'elle ref.ète déjà, en protondeur, toute la richesse d'un brillant coloris — ROUGE CRAMOISI — irisé de LAQUE ECARLATE — qui ne faiblira pas en cours d'épanouissement.
