Named for a novel by Thomas Hardy. Hardy was born in Higher Bockhampton on 2 June 1840. He died at his home, Max Gate, on the outskirts of Dorchester 11 January 1928. Casterbridge is supposedly Dorchester. Some of his other books for which roses have been named are 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' and 'Jude the Obscure'.
