...A rose that has been a companion of mine for many years is 'Banshee'. Experts differ as to how ro categorize this rose, some placing it with the Gallicas, others with the Damasks. I'll leave the bickering to the botanists and rosarians as I blissfully enjoy its lush perfume and robust blooms that appear for a few weeks in June. Located on the soth side, near the end of my property, this rose stands out as I walk to my back garden. Its 8-foot-long, thick, thorny canes, which bend near the top, ...Once fall approaches, 'banshee' displays a rich tapestry of fall foliage colors, including mahogany, tawny brown, and yellow. ...Although not considered a climber, 'Banshee' can definitely be used in this fashion.

Désirée Parmentier ...(Debate surrounds the exact identity of this rose. Some experts feel it doesn't fit with either the Gallicas or the Damasks and therefore, think it needs to be categorized as a "found rose" - meaning a rose whose exact identity is unclear at this time). It has grown almost 6 feet high and just as wide....heavenly scented blooms and...rosy pink flowers, which appear tightly coiled with many petals. 'Désirée Parmentier' blooms in midsummer when most other once-bloomers have completed their cycle of flowers. In my garden, it has exhibited a modest amount of suckering and cane dieback.

The light green leaves of 'Désirée Parmentier' are a gentle variation next to the full-petaled, lavender-pink blossoms of the rose.

My rose guru, Graham Stuart Thomas, gave a rare review to the moss rose 'Général Kleber'. He praised its "clear and refined beauty", the double blooms which are large, cotton-candy pink, and fragrant. ...At four feet high and wide, it's aniother nice choice for a small garden. It is heavily mossed on the stems and buds, a feature taht appeals to me. There are a few inches of dieback on the canes, but not a cumbersome amount.

A Moss rose that has become rather mature for me in recent years is 'Goethe'. A vigorous bush, it grows more than 5 feet high and 4 feet high. It is very prickly and the buds have a great deal of brownish moss on them. Sometimes I like to squeeze the buds between my fingers to savor their stickiness and fully appreciate the mossy texture, as well as to feel the plumpness of the bud. The prickles are burgundy colored and play off well againstthe dark green leaves that are etched sparingly in red. The well-cupped, magenta-pink flowers have a yellow center and bloom one time in early summer. 'Goethe' handles Colorado's tough winters well, with little damage to its stout canes.
