Origin:

Bred by François Lacharme (France, 1861).
Introduced in Australia by William Taylor, Vice-Regal Nurseries in 1865 as 'Charles Lefèbvre'.

Class:

Hybrid Perpetual.

Bloom:

Crimson, purple shading. Strong fragrance. 70 petals. Average diameter 2.75". Medium, full (26-40 petals), borne mostly solitary, in small clusters, cupped, scalloped bloom form. Occasional repeat later in the season.

Habit:

Few or no prickles/thorns, well-branched. Light green foliage.

Height: 4' to 10' (120 to 305cm). Width: 4' (120cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 6b through 9b (default). Hardy. vigorous. can be trained as a climber. Disease susceptibility: susceptible to rust .

Gén. Jacqueminot (hybrid perpetual, Roussel 1853) × Victor Verdier (Hybrid Perpetual, Lacharme, 1859)

Notes:

'Marguerite Brassac', 'Paul Jamain' and 'Sir Garnet Wolseley' were declared synonyms of 'Charles Lefèbvre' in 1885 - see References. However, these were originally considered as distinct roses.
