Classification as a hybrid spinosissima is doubtful, according to Skinner, "This fine rose, which we owe to Dr. Merkeley, of Winnipeg, came from Siberia a number of years ago and is apparently related to the Cinnamon Roses.

origin: named for Dr. H. J. Merkeley, dentist in Winnipeg [Brian Porter] who sent it to F. Skinner from collection he had made in his travels [Pittao] Similar to R. spinosissima [Osborne]
