    My own root plant has taken a few years to come into its own, but this year it is out pacing its neighbor, Valentine, a rose that has been in the ground one year longer. Flowers darken with age and obtain velvety red tones. A first rate rose that should be more widely grown.

    Charming Maid and Dusky Maiden were initially rejected for patents based on a claim of prior disclosure in the 1954 ARS Annual. The patents were eventually issued after a successful appeal. See

    I really llike this rose from the pictures I have seen but wonder...is it a true red or considererd red like Knock Out is considered red?

    The breeder describes it as "dark maroon-crimson". See REFRENCE for "Rose Growing Complete" on the rose page.

    This is the real deal -- true blood red. It doesn't blue out at all (no fading to crimson or cherry red like Knock Out) and doesn't burn either. A first rate rose in all ways and really great, true red color. HIGHLY recommended.

    I have just seen this rose growing in the Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden in Timaru, New Zealand, and it is a stunner! The flowers are the deepest, darkest blood red. Very, very beautiful and immediately on my 'find room for it' list.
