For years, I'd heard Clair Martin at The Huntington Library relate that how this rose received its name was Winifred Coulter was the premarital girlfriend of the introducer, John van Barneveld. Supposedly, he would seldom miss a chance to throw Winifred up to his wife. When he brought home a bloom of the rose to ask what she'd suggest he name it, she reportedly replied, "Why don't you call it Winifred Coulter?" I related that story once to Dorothy Crallie, the proprietress of Pixie Treasures miniature rose nursery. She listened and said that wasn't the way it was at all. She had known both the van Barneveld's and the Coulters, and said they were best friends and owned vacation homes on Balboa Island next door to one another. Both couples were very keen on square dancing. She said Winifred had a white square dancing dress with hot pink crinoline skirts, as she plucked a bloom of the rose and turned it upside down. Upon seeing the swirling hot pink petals with their white reverses, I immediately understood how the rose was named.
