Although evening shows are disappointing, in that yellow Roses appear pale in the electric light, red Roses are most satisfactory. Even Earl Haig, rarely bright in daylight, appeared more satisfactory at St. Mary's Hall in the evening display,

That winner of many championships, Earl Haig, secured another award at the show held at Auckland on November 4. This particular bloom was a very fair specimen, of good colour and shape., One of the Earl's worst features, in Auckland at any rate, is a tendency to be lacking in "brightness."

At the Hamilton Rose Show the old favourite, Earl Haig, gained the judges' verdict, largely on account of its colour, which was exceptionally good. As a rule Earl Haig's colour is rather dull and unattrac-tive, but this bloom, grown by Mr. Bennett, had a very pleasing brilliance.
