Please note I'm an absolute beginner in rose breeding. I just spotted an oddity when browsing HMF which I want to bring to your attention. Maybe rose breeding veterans with a lot of reference books can sort it out?

Weisser Herumstreicher has quite a lot of descendants, but in contrast there is little to no information to be found about it and the rose is not in commerce anymore.
White Rambler by the same breeder, bred in the same year, has lots of information and is still in commerce today. Synonym Thalia.

Could there have been a confusion of names at some time, and instead of White Rambler = Thalia, in reality it is White Rambler = Weisser Herumstreicher?

I may have little knowledge of roses, but I do know German, and "Weisser Herumstreicher" is indeed the German translation for "White Rambler". I started wondering about this odd rose name when it suddenly hit me.

Now I'm curious about your opinion!

Thank you for this interesting question. We added a few more references to 'Weisser Herumstreicher' and 'Thalia'. It is now clear that the date of 1895 for the introduction of the former was erroneous, a mix-up with 'White Rambler'. J.C. Schmidt's rose was introduced in 1899 and is a crossing of 'Daniel Lacombe' x 'Paquerette', while 'Thalia' = 'White Rambler' of Schmitt/Lambert (1895) derives from 'Polyantha sarmentosa' x 'Paquerette'. As 'Daniel Lacombe' itself is a seedling of the same 'Polyantha sarmentosa', it seems that J.C. Schmidt tried to improve on the earlier 'White Rambler' by a further backcrossing.
The claim to fame of 'Weisser Herumstreicher' is is only apparent descendant 'Tausendschön'. We will need to investigate if this parentage is actually stated in early literature.

It seems that 'Tausendschön' is a seedling of 'Crimson Rambler'. The parentage 'Daniel Lacombe x Weisser Herumstreicher is mentioned later only.
